The research interests of the group include all tools and methods related to any stage of product design and manufacturing.
At present the activity is mainly focussed on the following areas: machine design; system dynamics; structural mechanics; computer-aided engineering (including finite elements analysis, computational fluid dynamics and multi-body simulation); fatigue mechanics; random loads fatigue; comfort evaluation; motion sickness analysis; product design; design tools and method in Engineering; engineering drawing; computer-aided design; design for life-cycle; tolerance analysis; machine vision and machine learning for industrial applications.

Seminar on texture analysis at QMUL

Texture analysis plays a pivotal role in many machine vision applications including, among the others, product inspection, surface grading, defect detection, content-based image retrieval, computer-assisted diagnosis and remote sensing. This seminar will introduce some basic concepts about texture analysis and will focus on a class of methods known as 'Histogram of Equivalent Patterns'. The concepts treated are accessible to a general technical audience and only require some basic knowledge of image processing. The Workshop on Color and Texture in Material Recognition will take place in Genoa, Italy, in conjunction with the 18th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing (ICIAP), Sept. 7-11, 2015. The workshop will cover different areas of image processing including colour and texture analysis, material perception, remote sensing, medical imaging and industrial inspection. Deadline for paper submission: June 3, 2015.
This presentation show a multibody tool developed by Machine Design research group to be used in the field of Virtual Prototyping, able to allow engineers and designers to evaluate the kinematic and dynamic behavior of rigid, front suspended and full suspended bikes through a paramtric, non linear multibody model. Very interesting could be its application for the estimation of bike fatigue behaviour both in time and in frequency domain.

The Italian patent and trademark office recently approved a patent application about an innovative apparatus for acquiring a plurality of surface images of at least one body and related methods. The invention, which is the result of a cooperation between the Department of Engineering, Mondial Marmi Srl and colleagues from the University of Vigo (Spain) is composed of optical means for image acquisition and one dome-shaped illuminator provided with one inferior basement  to integrally hold the object to acquire. On top of the dome is a rotatable device for revolving the optical means about a rotation axis in a controlled manner. The apparatus is particularly suitable for acquiring images of industrial and hand-made products such as - but not limited to - natural stone, wood, ceramics, textiles, etc.
